Thursday July 5th- Felicia Harding!

Felicia plays sweet, polished, straight-ahead pop with a smooth voice and some Cranberries influence. Go listen to her tunes on her myspace and then come down for the show on Thursday!

Friday June 29th - Wooden Sky!

Wooden Sky is coming by to share some tunes! They play an eclectic mix of alt country and folk-rock. Gentle plucked strings with alternating smooth and raspy vocals. It's really beautiful, you should go listen to them even if you don't intend on going to the show, I'd say. Here's their Myspace.

Monday July 9th - Skip Jensen and The Travelling Headcase!

Skip Jensen sings gritty, raw, electric folk rock. It reminds me of something in between Tom Waits and Nick Cave. His melodies are stripped down and his guitar sounds like it has just been on a bender. Check out his Myspace for audio evidence. The Travelling Headcase
The Travelling Headcase is a mellow acoustic folk outfit with bluegrass undertones. For some listening pleasure, check out their Myspace before you come down to the show.

Monday June 25th - Steven Oitogi!

Steven Oitogi will be reading starting at 9:30, his book will be on sale at the reading for $10.

Monday May 28th - The Divorcees!

The Divorcees are defending country music from the recent trend of pop-rock bubblegum with a banjo thrown on top. It's not squeeky-clean, but it's got soul. Check out their Myspace for some straight country, no chaser.

Friday May 18th - Chelsea Rich!

Chelsea Rich is a local singer/songwriter who makes jazzy folk-rock. Check out her Myspace before you come down.

Saturday May 12th - Phoera!

They say that they sound like, a "lantern ridden oarship sailing through a starry, moonlit swamp." What this translates to is dark, melodic rock with metal and prog influences. Check out their songs before you come down.

Saturday May 5th - Lex McKie!

Acoustic riot folk with a concious punk side. Lex can be describd as a mix of Derrick Jensen and Phil Ochs. Lex is from Edmonton Alberta, a member of the IWW (industrial Workers Of The World) and also a
proud Vegan. Lex plays in 2 punk bands as well Self Rule and Eleutheros. Lex has been doing his accoustic folk music since 2003. Lex will be playing his folk music as a solo act.

Friday May 4th - Rejean And Friends!

The Missie Edwards Band has been playing Victoria for fun, raising the rooftops wherever they go. Listen to their music and plan your night around it!

Sunday, April 15th - Helena Arlock with Gustav and The Seasick Sailors!

On April 15th Ocean Island is getting invaded by delicious Swedish pop. The wonderful loungy-electro pop of Helena Arlock will be filling the lounge, followed by the indie folk-pop of Gustav and The Seasick Sailors. This show is going to be fantastic! Don't take my word for it, settle down with some tea and listen to Helena and Gustav, after you are done dancing around the room, make plans to come down to our lounge for a fun time.

Friday April 13th - Keytar Warrior & ODDitory Presence!

Keytar Warrior brings Keytar Rawk, ODDitory Presence bring the beat boxing and poetry. Celebrate this Friday the 13th with a picnic for your ears.

Friday April 6th - Kids With Abilities!

Friday, April 6th we're having the Kids with Abilities over for some improvisational electronic experiments. They'll be cooking up new sounds for your hungry ears, and you'll want to be there to see it all go down.

Saturday April 5th - Coco Love Alcorn!

Ocean Island is proud to present Coco Love Alcorn, stopping by Ocean Island as part of her Island tour before embarking across Canada. Her voice has been compared to a "sumptuous, simmering full-course meal" and she's been dubbed an "artist to watch" by the Vancouver Sun. If you are a lover of jazz, folk and R&B, you don't want to miss this show! Listen to her music here before you come down.

Saturday March 24th - Seven Year Old Poets!

These guys always come in and rock our place: they have their chops, bring in tons of fun friends and are always a good time. Listen to their music and make plans to come down!

Saturday March 17th - St. Patrick's Day Party!

This St. Patrick's Day the Ocean Island Lounge is going to be partying hard with crazy drink specials and live Irish dancers. The dancers come on at 7pm and 11pm, the party starts at 6pm.

Friday March 9th - Soniferus!

Soniferus returns to share their unique acoustic rhythms with us. Live acoustic hip hop is rare these days, especially the good stuff. Come and check it out!

Saturday March 10th - Ma Belle!

Ma Belle come all the way from Quebec to share their French folk pop with us. Malcolm from the Beatle Pimps fills in on bass. This promises to be a unique show, so come on and check it out!

We're stoked that Julia Anne will be playing her first gig here at our lounge this Saturday. You should be too! Come on down and take it in, show at 9.

Saturday February 17th - Jay Dunphy and John Dye!

This is going to be an awesome show, Jay Dunphy returns to drop his raspy rock and alt country on us and this time he's brought backup! John Dye, an acoustic artist from Vancouver with gritty folk and country leanings, is coming by to share his tunes with us. It's sure to be a great night, so come by and take it all in. Friday February 16th - The Shores rock our lounge!

Naomi Marchand is a 22 yr old young woman who grew up in Ontario and has spent much of her recent time here in Victoria--for a period as a guest in our hostel. In recent years Naomi traveled and pursued her interest in yoga, to the point that she had become a yoga instructor. Recently she returned to visit her family, during which time she had a serious fall at her parents’ home that has tragically left her paralyzed from the waist down.

At this point, it remains a question as to whether she will be covered by liability insurance. As can be expected with a disability of this nature, there are considerable costs that are not covered by health insurance. Naomi is currently in Shenzen, China undergoing stem cell treatment. This treatment, although new, seems promising. Naomi has had glimmers of sensation in her legs after recent treatments.

Hutsey returns to tear up the sonic atmosphere for a good cause. Opening for Hutsey are the the Shores, who rocked our lounge the last time they came by, and are coming back to finish what they started. Listen to their music and then come down to take it in live at our lounge! Also on stage--figuratively--are The Impromaniacs, and improv comedy outfit and Nathan, a local acoustic performer. There will be a 50-50 draw, a silent auction and much more!

Thursday February 15th - Hank Angel and his Island Devils!

WOW Magazine had this to say about the band, "if you took a time machine back to the Grand Ole Opry, slipped something sinister into Ernest Tubbs' drink, and he played his music 800 miles an hour, you'd be getting close." For proof check out myspace.

February 6th & 9th- Bob Marley Sing-Along with Rejean and Friends!

Come and sing along to Marley's songs of love and freedom with Rejean and friends.

The Beatle Pimps have awesome Beatles covers and original songs, offering a fun, chilled-out evening that's easy to get into, and fun to sing along with. The impromaniacs bring their hysterically funny improv comedy and it's guaranteed to be a good time!

Monday January 22nd - Ball Gag'n Chain Gang!

Born out of a the backwoods of Bommerville, North Ontario. The Ball Gag n' Chain Gang has come to capital city to spread the gospel of Tonk--with Pleanty a' fixins along the way. They'll play anywhere 'cept church, 'cause they 'been banned.: myspace.com/ballgagnchaingang. I recommend listening to the Tom Waits-influenced "Unleash The Beast."

Friday January 19th - Pernell Reichert and The Hard Drinkers!

Pernell Reichert and The Hard Drinkers have been on the road off and on for the past few years, and on the 19th they are stopping by our lounge. Thursday January 11th - Soniferus rocks the party that rocks the party!

A five-piece acoustic hip hop/tribal wrold-fusion group, Soniferus comes by to rock our lounge this Thursday. It's not often that you get to check out a full band doing acoustic hip hop and world fusion, so you should come down and check it out while you can.

Monday January 8th - The Return of Adam Zonnis!

Adam's played here a bunch of times now, and it's gone from "this is cool" to "wow, this is fun!" so join the fun! Adam plays banjo, guitar, works with grooves, trumpet, violin, and he's got some vocal cords on him too!

Sunday December 31st - New Year's Bash!

The Ocean Island new year party! We're going to bring in the new year with style, rocking out to Sven's DJ set and toasting with champagne! We'll have drink specials, snacks, a countdown and it all starts at 9:30.

Jessica Stuart has played here before with a different band, and it rocked, and tons of cool people showed up and jammed along with them, so you should check this one out too! This is your last chance to come out and see Jessica before she leaves for Toronto!

Friday, December 15th, come rock with The Shores and Batteryhead !

The Shores are coming by to rock out in a melodic, 60s pop-influenced, get up and sock-hop kinda way. You probably like their music, even if you haven't heard it yet, myspace.com/shorespace.

Thursday December 14th: Vancouver-Victoria rock & roll dance party with The Doers, Colin McKill (from the Fine Options!) and Keytar Warrior!

Indie pop mutants from Vancouver let loose their powers on the unsuspecting garden city. Victorians like Colin from the Fine Options (who I'd like to thank for being a great band) and Noah Ferguson as Keytar Warrior. The night is gonna go Keytar Warrior, Colin and The Doers. Sunday November 12th: The Perpetual Motion Roadshow!

Mary Van Note's edgy and unique style of stand-up comedy has already been recognized by various Bay Area comics as a refreshing up-and-coming talent. After developing a cult following at the UC Santa Cruz campus, Mary Van Note has started her stand-up career in the Bay Area to big laughs, moans, dirty looks and scared faces. In her off time she writes short stories, comic books and zines, finished a novel titled Blue Balls, and performs in the sketch-comedy group "Sunshine Fortress."

Olatundji Akpo-Sani grew up in Rochester, New York. He moved to Boulder, Colorado at the age of 21 and has spent the last eight years improving and performing his unique style of poetry in the Boulder and Denver area. He is married to Lisa Bendetto and currently has a stepdaughter, Sierra. Olatundji is co-editor and founder of Baobob Tree Press, which he runs out of his house. He has four books of poetry: Bricolage, Panopticon, Dive, and most recently, MonkeyShines; he has appeared in Poems from Penny Lane and Illiterate magazine.

Yehuda Fisher lives in Toronto with two computers and a dozen instruments... almost. This 27-year-old brass player, singer, songwriter, and actor has been in the Toronto arts scene for years, both entertaining and terrorizing audiences around the city, depending on who you ask. Formerly he hosted and produced Art Attack, a weekly magazine show for CHRY 105.5 FM, and worked as a freelance arts publicist. He now hosts the very successful series WordJam: Poetry/Music Fusion Playtime. Yehuda often plays trombone with the Parkdale Social Club and other local musicians and is currently working on recording his first album.

Thursday November 9th: David Hein!

Friday November 3rd: Adam Zonnis brings us another free, all-ages avalanche of folk rock!

He keeps coming back and blowing us away, so come by and catch him in the act this time! Adam is a one-man-band-party-music-whiz-kid, who never fails to entertain everyone who comes to check him out. His LiveVictoria profile reads "Adam Zonnis deals with his permanently altered consciousness by bringing you brain wrenching hardcore banjo rock, psychedelic instrumental combinations and straight-up good-time country songs," and you know? It's true!

Tuesday October 31st - "what are you doing on actual halloween night?"

If you still wanna party on the 31st, take your party over to Ocean Island Lounge, and we'll hook you up with some drinks, some tunes and set you loose on our dance floor!

Saturday the 28th - free, all-ages, crazy, insane, awesome halloween party!!!!!

I'll just repeat everything that's on the poster in text, because that's a good idea on the web:

We will have 3 music zombies playing awesome party music (ok we're having trouble raising one of them from the dead, so there'll be at least 2 music zombies), we'll have crazy-awful costume contests, we'll have drink specials, we'll have some random other games and stuff, and using our kick-ass internet connection of doom, we'll find your requests (within the realm of party) and play them!

Friday October 27th - Sing-along folk & reggae jam party with Rejean & Friends!

Rejean is this rad bilingual Canadian singer, he's all about doing Bob Marley tributes and other political songs, and above all enjoys having a good time singing along with lots of fun people - that's you! So come join him and his special guests on drums and other instruments!

Saturday October 21st - Victoria Global Beats House & Trance party with Andrew Lynch!

Join London DJ Andrew Lynch for a great night of funky, disco-influenced house and white-hot trance from the UK and the rest of Europe. Andrew brings a fresh international club flavour to our chilled lounge!

Friday October 20th - Lemonshifter!

Ok the band is apparently as such: James Kasper: songwriting, vocals, guitar, harmonica. Geoff Howe: harmony vocals, guitar, bass. Jude Pelley: mandolin, guitar, bass. Sophie Middleton: harmony vocals. Chris Meglic: percussion.

So apparently they're going to play with most or all of the band - yay! So the 2-person poster is a bit off. Shoulda put 'em all in there! Anyways.

October 13th - the Missie Edwards Band is back!

Saturday October 7th - Steve McGlenn's "Dark and Dusty Road" tour!

Steve McGlenn is from Alberta, he's touring to support his new album "Dark and Dusty Road," and he'll be playing with Rejean & Friends, who will be doing a Bob Marley tribute and playing some other political songs as well.

Cancelled at the last minute because "our van broke down" - Thursday September 28th: The Expos and One Night Band - a free all ages reggae & ska party!!!

These two bands are in the middle of their canadian tour, they're playing a show on friday 29th at Lucky Bar as well, and Lucky is great, their speakers are great and everything, but our show will be free and all-ages!!! Check out the one night band and the expos on myspace immediately!
